“Open Data from Below”

Open data is all around us; it helps us get navigate our cities, find out if we need to bring an umbrella, and find out the location of public services. But what happens when data just doesn’t exist? How can communities organize data for themselves? How can this data become part of official data sets, and how can it be used to increase access to services and make peoples’ lives easier?

Ricky Abisla
Portfolio Manager of the Americas for Caravan Studios, a division of TechSoup. Richard is focused on working deeply with communities to organize their efforts so that they can build tools and increase their impact, and is a believer in the power of participatory methodologies to highlight the needs of local communities. He has been working throughout the Americas to help people access information for most of his career. Most recently, Richard has focused on working with librarians and library users in Brazil to create applications and processes that help solve local problems, as well as training librarians to integrate human centered design principles into their work.
